The Herd

Want to hear something so silly it’s worth an eye roll? I still get weird, intrusive thoughts about posting pictures of our herd. Lately, I’ve caught myself feeling nervous that someone might think, "Oh, she said they sell Angus beef, and I see Herefords in that herd!"

Here’s the thing: not everything on the ranch is destined for our beef program with Silo Springs Ranch’s name on it. Some cattle are sold on the hoof through traditional methods, like the sale barn. Yes, the majority of the beef we butcher is Angus, but if I’m being honest, my absolute favorite breed for beef is Charolais.

If the Charolais breed association marketed them as much as Angus, I bet you’d agree with me! So, while we mainly sell Angus beef. But, I’m happy to tell you when we’ve got Charolais or Hereford beef available, because they’re seriously underrated.

But back to my silly thoughts—when I post a picture of the herd, I worry that some folks are just waiting to catch a mistake. In reality, it’s a genuine herd full of cows that Arlin handpicked for their genetics. So, when you see a white or gray cow in the mix, know those ones are mine, because they’re my absolute favorites!

I’ll keep sharing glimpses of our herd with pride—quirky mix and all—because that’s what makes Silo Springs special.

Thanks for understanding, and maybe next time you see one of those Charolais, you’ll smile and know it’s not a mistake—it’s just my favorite!

That is Arlin trying to drive back up to the barn, but there are a few road blocks.
